I chose the gorilla, a type of ape that is endangered, and its population is only 100,000 to 200,000. Lots of threats are killing gorillas and destroying their habitat. Habitat destruction is a huge problem across the gorillas’ central African range, and some African cultures kill and eat gorillas, and this is increasing year after year after year. The Ebola virus has destroyed many African ape and gorilla populations. Gorillas are killed for their bushmeat trade, which has been happening for years. The trade will even spread the Ebola virus, deadly to both humans and gorillas. Another threat is weak law enforcement. Killing gorillas and trading gorilla products are illegal all across the gorillas’ range. Poachers, traders, and consumers are rarely stopped.
I chose the gorilla because I have always loved them, just like my mom. I’ve read books about gorillas, and I have a few stuffed animals that are gorillas. I think gorillas are interesting because they share 98% of our human DNA, so they are our closest relatives. Without gorillas, if they became extinct, it would be as if we humans are killing our closest relatives. Only 100,000 to 200,000 are left in the world, and I am determined to help save them. Gorillas are also one of the most endangered common species in the world, and are in need of help. We can help to save gorillas by making a gorilla adoption to help gorillas from becoming extinct, and by helping WWF’s conservation efforts.
