I chose the chimpanzee because they are one of my favorite
animals, smartest animals, and are the closest to the human. The chimpanzee is a mammal, and its diet is an omnivore. Omnivores are animals or people that eat both plants and meat. The average life span in the wild is 45 years. The average height of the chimpanzee is 4ft to 5.5ft tall. The average weight of the chimpanzee is 70 – 140 lbs. or 32 – 60 kg. When they are together in a group they are called a community. The size of a chimpanzee is just about the height of a 6ft tall man. Many scientists say that the chimpanzee are the closest living animal to the human having 98% of our DNA. They also say humans and chimpanzees share an ancestry that goes back 4-8 million years ago. As you can see, the chimpanzee is one of the smartest and closest animals to the human.
The chimpanzees are endangered due to the destruction of their habitat and them getting hunted down for their meat and trading. The African forest is being logged, farmed, and mined, or being destroyed in the process, taking away their habits. This is leaving only small areas that are unconnected to their population and leaving them isolated. Back in late 2002, a wild outbreak of Ebola was killing apes and chimpanzees. In Western Africa there is a thing called bush meat or hunting chimpanzees and apes for their meat and trading for money. The trade for their meat is very popular in West Africa. Many baby chimpanzees are taken alive and sold for high prices in the cities of Western Africa as pets. The chimpanzees are also dying from being exposed to their predators such as snakes and extremely dangerous wild animals. When the adult chimpanzee is captured it is used as a bait for larger and much more dangerous animals. As you can see, there is much we need to do to help.
What we are doing to help the chimpanzee is, we are making reserves for them to live on, made brush meat trade illegal in all African countries, and there are special organizations who adopt the chimpanzees and send them to zoos all over the US and Africa. Many people in Africa and the U.S. are doing many things to help like adopting the animal, giving large amounts of money to the local charities for the chimpanzee, and finally making sure that there habitat in Africa is not getting destroyed by logging companies who destroy the land without the right permission. So the U.S. and Africa have also made special reserves for the chimpanzees to live on. As you can see, the United States and Africa do care about the chimpanzee and do not want it to go extinct.
