The animal I picked is the penguin. Their dietary habits consist of: small shrimp, fish, crabs and squid. These beautiful creatures have been endangered since 1970, that’s almost 43 years! There are 17 species of penguins which only reach about 20 million penguins. Ten of the species are considered endangered or threatened. The main reason why penguins are endangered is because of global warming. I know it seems like we blame global warming for everything, but in this case, it’s appropriate. They live on Polar ice caps. Now, because of the warmer temperature changes, the ice caps are melting. If the ice caps melt, it means that the penguins lose their home. When all the ice caps melt, penguins are left without a home. This means that they will die. So, we have to stop global warming from increasing anymore, or else the world will be rid from the existence of penguins.
The average height of a penguin is about 16 inches, and weighs about 2.2 pounds. The Emperor Penguin is the biggest of all penguins and its height average is about 3.7 feet and weighs somewhere around 60 to 90 pounds. Their lifespan is about 15 to 20 years. They spend most of their lives under water which is about 75% of the time.
The reason I picked the penguin is because I’ve always had an interest in them. I think that we can help the penguins from going extinct. If we try to cut down on all the gas productions, or at least turn the heat down in our homes, that would have a major impact on global warming. If we stop polluting the air as much as we do, we could help save the penguins. Researchers say that 50% of the emperor penguins and 75% of the Adelie penguins will probably lessen or disappear if global warming temperatures rise above the normal air temperature by only 2˚C. This could all happen in time of just 40 years. Penguins have been around for at least 60 million years. Would we really want to lose them now? To help them, you can “adopt” a penguin to raise money to help save them.
