Sea turtles are an animal that everyone enjoys to look at and see in zoos. They live in water but the females move to land for nesting. What they eat depends on subspecies but most like to eat jellyfish, seaweed, crabs, shrimp, sponges, snails, algae, and mollusks. Turtles are found mostly in warm waters across the world.
There are seven types of sea turtles in the world, and unfortunately six of these are on the redlist as either threatened or endangered. Sea turtles are unintentionally caught and drowned by shrimping vessels. The nets are, unfortunately, not hauled in fast enough to save them. Turtles are also a source of food and income for many people around the world. Their meat and eggs are eaten and sold. Some also kill turtles for medicine and religious ceremonies. Thousands of sea turtles are lost these ways every year.
I chose this animal because it is one of my favorites. Turtles don’t do any harm and they are very cute. They deserve to be protected and conserved. We could help endangered sea turtles by protesting to stop shrimping vessels in areas where sea turtles are highly present. We can research to find alternatives for medicine instead of using turtles. No animal should be used for human purposes like medicine, income, or simply out of cruelty.
