I have decided to research the snow leopard. They are endangered mostly because of humans. Snow leopard’s habitat range keeps getting smaller as humans settle their homes and use the land as grazing space. Local farmers hunt Argali sheep, which snow leopards eat. As their natural prey becomes harder to find, snow leopards are forced to kill livestock for survival. They eat sheep, goats, horses, and yak calves. The farmers then kill the snow leopards for eating their livestock. The thing that kills snow leopards the most though, is climate change. They live in mountains in the Eastern Himalayas and Yangtze. Climate change could result in a loss of up to 30 percent of their Himalayan habitat alone.
I chose the snow leopard to raise awareness about their habitat being destroyed. They deserve to be able to live in their habitat without being killed. WWF is trying to save them by stopping the illegal trade of snow leopard fur, bones and other body parts. They also want to help save their habitat by trying to stop mining in their habitat. You can help snow leopards by adopting one on the WWF website.
There are only about 4,080-6,590 snow leopards left in the wild. They are about 2-5 ft. long and weigh about 60 to 120 pounds. The snow leopards eat marmots, pika, hares, and birds, but their favorite meal is blue sheep and ibex. Their scientific name is panthera uncia. The snow leopards are the kings of the mountains. They live in Asian countries including China, Bhutan, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Russia, and Mongolia. Please help the snow leopards keep their habitat.
